The Black Mirror Basic 3 is a ground-up redesign of Timemore's best-selling brewing scale, developed with 2022 World Barista Champion Anthony Douglas. It's 25% lighter and 35% smaller than the Basic 2. It adds dedicated Pour-Over and Espresso modes, a live brew ratio readout and electromagnetic shielding, so you get steadier readings and a faster workflow at the brew bar or on the drip tray.

At just 20mm tall, the Basic 3 fits under most home espresso machines. It keeps the minimalist Black Mirror look and 0.1g accuracy that made its predecessor one of the best budget coffee scales you can buy.

Timemore Black Mirror Basic 3 Features

  • Three timer modes: Regular, Pour-Over and Espresso, switched with the new multifunction slider
  • Live brew ratio: add your dose and the scale shows your coffee-to-water ratio in real time as you pour
  • Espresso mode: auto-tares when you place your cup, then starts timing with the first drop for hands-free shots
  • Real-time flow rate: monitor your pour speed in grams per second for more consistent extractions
  • Electromagnetic shielding: stable readings when using magnetic dosing cups, funnels and nearby appliances
  • Improved low-end sensitivity: detects weight from 0.2g, so auto-timers trigger sooner and small doses read accurately
  • Result lock: lift your carafe at the end of a brew and your final weight and time stay on screen
  • IPX3 splash resistance: single-piece top shell with a silicone gasket
  • Wrap-around silicone mat: grips the scale edge to edge, with spill channels, and flips over into a portafilter rest
  • 24-hour battery: 1600mAh with USB-C charging

Timemore Basic 2 vs Basic 3: What's Changed?

The Basic 3 keeps the Basic 2's core formula of 0.1g accuracy, a 2kg capacity, flow rate and an auto-start timer. What changes is how it fits into your workflow, especially for espresso. It's smaller and lighter, it's easier to switch between brew styles, and its readings stay stable around magnetic tools. We wrote a full article going into all the differences that you can read here.

  • Smaller and lighter: 14 x 12 x 2 cm and 300g, compared with 15.3 x 13 x 2.6 cm on the Basic 2
  • Dedicated modes: Regular, Pour-Over and Espresso, where the Basic 2 has a single auto-timer
  • Espresso auto-tare: new on the Basic 3
  • Live brew ratio: new on the Basic 3
  • Electromagnetic shielding: new on the Basic 3
  • Lower minimum weight: 0.2g, compared with 0.5g
  • Multifunction slider: replaces the Basic 2's side on/off switch
  • IPX3 rating and a wrap-around mat: replace the Basic 2's splash-resistant top and flat pad

  • POUR OVER RATIO

Generally Pour Over and Filter Coffee have a water to coffee ratio of 1:15.
Although it is important to know that some coffee tastes better at a lower or higher ratio and that numbers are just a guide.

  • POUR OVER BREW TIME

Depending on a range of different factors your pour over coffee might be really quick and only last 1 minute or can last up to 10 minutes. Most pour overs generally take around 2-4 minutes and consistently long pour overs may be a result of stalling.

  • WATER FOR POUR OVER COFFEE

The hotter your water is the higher amount of extraction will occur. Put simply, this is all you need to know but when it comes down to dialling-in your coffee you can change your water temperature to change the flavour of your coffee.

  • BREW METHODS

The method, technique and overall recipe you use to brew your pour over coffee is known as your 'Brew Method'.
Depending on how many pours your use, the level of agitation when pouring and the brewing equipment you use will all determin how your coffee will taste.

  • COFFEE GRINDER

As soon as you grind your coffee beans they start to age and loose freshness, it's vital you grind your coffee fresh right before brewing pour over coffee.

Not all coffee grinders are built the same, some prioritise budget, portability, grind quality and some are even designed just for filter brewing or espresso brew methods.
Choosing a high quality coffee grinder will have a huge impact on how your coffee ends up tasting.

  • COFFEE DRIPPER

To make pour over coffee you will need a coffee dripper, this holds the coffee filter and grounds in place and sits ontop of a server or cup.
Coffee drippers come in a huge variety of materials, shapes and sizes all making impacts on how your coffee is brewed and how it tastes.
