In a bold move towards sustainability, Origami has unveiled the latest addition to its renowned coffee equipment line the Origami ReWork dripper. This innovative product marks the launch of the “ReWork” project, an initiative aimed at redefining the lifecycle of ceramic products through the use of recycled materials. Today, we explore the significance of this new product and its impact on both coffee brewing and environmental sustainability.
A New Life for Recycled Mino Yaki Porcelain
The Origami ReWork dripper continues the elegant design of the original Origami dripper but introduces a crucial twist in its manufacturing process.
By incorporating 20% recycled porcelain, previously crushed during production, the Origami ReWork Dripper not only gives new life to discarded material but also sets a precedent for sustainable manufacturing practices within the ceramics industry in Japan.
The ReWork dripper retains the iconic shape of the Origami Air Dripper and the original Origami Dripper, which is beloved by coffee enthusiasts for its 20 meticulously designed ribs. These ribs create optimal spacing between the dripper and the paper filter, allowing for smoother water flow and versatile brewing techniques. This design facilitates a brewing process that accentuates the complex flavours and aromas of coffee, making every cup a unique experience.
Embracing Unique Aesthetic Qualities
One of the distinguishing features of the Origami ReWork dripper is its unglazed, matte finish which not only preserves but celebrates the unique texture of the recycled porcelain. The shimmering appearance, a result of the clay mixed with crushed porcelain, adds a sophisticated and earthy touch to the dripper's overall aesthetic design. Although slightly larger in size compared to the original Origami Dripper, the ReWork dripper is compatible with the same accessories, ensuring a seamless transition for current Origami users. This includes the Origami Rings as well as the same sizing for the Origami Filter Papers.
Contributing to Environmental Sustainability
Origami’s ReWork project is not merely about innovation in design but also a commitment to environmental responsibility. The project comes at a time when the reduction of resource use is critical. Unlike plastic, which is often criticized for its environmental impact, ceramic products do not naturally decompose. Therefore, finding ways to recycle and reuse ceramic materials is crucial for reducing our ecological footprint.
The Coffee 2050 Problem
The launch of the ReWork dripper coincides with growing concerns over the Coffee 2050 Problem, which predicts a significant reduction in the global area suitable for growing Arabica beans due to climate change. As a key player in the coffee industry, Origami's efforts in sustainability go beyond product design to address broader environmental issues that could affect the future of coffee production globally.

A Local Tradition with a Global Impact
Produced in Toki City, a region in Japan famed for its Mino ware ceramics, the Origami dripper is rooted in a rich tradition of craftsmanship. However, just like the coffee fields, the clay mines that supply materials for Mino ware are facing depletion. Through initiatives like ReWork, Origami is setting an example for how manufacturers can contribute to solving global issues locally.
The Origami ReWork dripper is more than just a tool for brewing coffee; it is a statement of intent from a company that seeks to harmonise industry practices with environmental stewardship. By choosing products like the Origami ReWork dripper, consumers are not only enhancing their own coffee experience but are also supporting a move towards a more sustainable and resource-conscious world.
As we continue to navigate the challenges posed by environmental degradation and resource scarcity, it is innovative approaches like Origami’s ReWork project that will pave the way for a more sustainable future, every dripper at a time.
