Comandante offers not only a durable high quality product, but an incredibly intuitive precision instrument to grind coffee at an exact setting and still be compact enough to take on the go.
This grinder is built with the highest quality materials and offers a truly stunning visual aesthetic all while being one of the most precise portable hand grinders on the market.
Comandante MK3 vs MK4 Updates:
Comandante have released the MK4 grinder as the newest edition from it's predecessor, the Comandante MK3 Hand Grinder.
Some of the Comandante C40 MK4 updates include:
New Polymer Jar
made from a high quality BPA-Free Clear Polymer, these jars are incredibly durable and lightweight. These are the same dimensions of the MK3 and can still hold approximately 40 grams of roasted coffee. (Please note that the dimensions are the same and can be switched out with older MK3 jars)
Lighter Weight
Overall the new MK4 Comandante Grinders are around 600 grams and have had its weight reduced due to the Polymer Jars and the new designed internal structure.
Wood sourcing & New Colours
Comandante now source their wood sustainably for all their wooden outer body MK4 coffee grinders. as well as their sustainable sourcing they also have multiple colour ways available that are more affordable than the wooden veneer options.
MK4 New Internal structure
The MK4 has a new internal structure designed to prevent wastage and stop coffee beans from getting stuck in the axle slot (a common issue with the Comandante MK3 Grinders).
The top part of the internal structure can easily be removed when disassembling and allows users to easily access the entire coffee grinder when cleaning.
Comandante C40 MK4 Features:
The 39mm burrs are made from High-Alloyed, High-Nitrogen Stainless Steel (Insanely tough and designed to last)
The Natural Oak wooden handle compliments the body of the grinder which is wrapped in an oiled wooden veneer offering a textured surface to prevent slipping while in action as well as offering an individually unique pattern for every product.
The double axle bearings create a smooth enjoyable rotation that makes grinding super easy and quick. Just like other hand grinders you will know when you have finished grinding your dose when you start to feel less tension on the crank. Comandante grinders are easy to disassemble and super easy to clean.
The 2x jars included are designed to screw into the base of your grinder and collect the ground coffee but they are also a perfect coffee storage solution, especially when traveling for a day trip. These multi-purpose jars also happen to be the perfect diameter for when transferring freshly ground coffee into your AeroPress / AeroPress Go chamber.
The stepped dial located underneath the grinder is standard across the entire Comandante range. This allows you to communicate with any other Comandante grinder owner and share recipes so that you can both get the exact same grind size and follow the same recipe accurately even when you are on the other side of the world. It also has the coarser/finer direction etched into the burr set, which makes it super easy to adjust your grind size.
We found that a great starting point for the following brewing methods are:
- Turkish coffee at <5 clicks
- Espresso at 7-10 clicks
- AeroPress & Pour-over at 18-28 clicks
- French press and Cold brew at 30+ clicks

STOP MESSY GRINDING WITH RDT
Ross Droplet Technique 'RDT' refers to adding a small amount of water to your coffee beans prior to grinding. This additional moisture helps to reduce static build up in your coffee grinder and can drastically reduce the amount of mess while grinding coffee beans.
COFFEE GRINDERS - BARISTA BASICS
-
ELECTRIC VS HAND GRINDER?
Electric coffee grinders are quick and easy to use and make grinding espresso particularly easy. Hand grinders on the other hand are slower and demand more work.
But generally speaking a hand grinder that is the same price as an electric grinder will tend to perform better. This is because anything electronic and requires a motor will increase the cost of the final product. -
GRIND SIZE DISTRIBUTION
Grind size distribution refers to the range and consistency of particle sizes produced when your coffee is ground. A 'uniform grind size distribution' ensures that all particles are similar in size, leading to an even extraction and cleaner tasting coffee. Variations in grind size distribution can make your coffee taste muddy as some particle are extracting more than others.
-
CONICAL VS FLAT BURRS
Conical burrs offer efficient & low-heat grinding, making them ideal for home use and are commonly found in hand grinders. Flat burrs generally provide a more uniform grind size and are commonly used in electric coffee grinders, flat burrs are favoured by professionals for their precision and consistency particularly when grinding on finer grind sizes.

SPECIALIST OR GENERALIST
While some grinders can produce a range of different grind sizes it is important to know that they may not be the best quality of grind size. Depending on what types of coffee you're wanting to make, you may want to consider opting for a 'espresso grinder' or a 'filter grinder' rather than an 'all-rounder coffee grinder'
