While we are known for selling at home coffee equipment we wanted to bring you
something special for a limited time. Introducing the Grums Raw Espresso Face Scrub & Mask. Using recycled coffee grounds collected from numerous roasters this has personally been the best way I found to exfoliate my skin.
Brewing any type of coffee will always leave you with a whole lot of spent coffee grounds, and while most home brewers choose to not do anything with these there are a whole lot of uses you can use your spent coffee grounds for
4 Uses for your spent coffee ground:
After brewing coffee, the grounds are often discarded, but they can actually be repurposed in a number of ways. Here are four uses for spent coffee grounds:
-
Fertiliser: Coffee grounds are rich in nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus, which are essential nutrients for plant growth. You can sprinkle coffee grounds on the soil around plants or mix them into compost to give your plants a nutrient boost.
-
Pest Repellent: Coffee grounds have a strong, bitter smell that repels pests like ants, slugs, and snails. You can scatter the grounds around the base of plants or in areas where you want to keep pests away.
-
Body Scrub: Coffee grounds can be used as a natural exfoliant for the skin. Mix them with a carrier oil like coconut oil or olive oil to create a paste, then massage onto the skin to remove dead skin cells and leave skin feeling smooth and soft.
-
Odour Neutraliser: The absorbent properties of coffee grounds make them effective at neutralising odours. You can place a small bowl of dried coffee grounds in your fridge or pantry to absorb any unwanted smells. They can also be used to deodorise your hands after handling strong-smelling foods like garlic or onions.
The ultimate coffee scrub:
There are a whole lot of coffee scrubs, each with their own amount of oil, sugar, ground and other ingredients. Over the years we have tried a whole lot of different brands and are excited to be stocking the Grums Raw Espresso Face Scrub & Mask as this has been my personal favourite.
How to make a coffee scrub:
Grind Size
When it comes to making your own coffee scrub first thing to consider is your grind size! Depending on your brew method (espresso / filter / cold brew) you may want to use these for different parts of your body, the finer the grind size I found is best for delicate skin such as your face. While larger grind sizes are better suited for rougher skin as they are much more abrasive.
What ingredients are used in coffee scrubs?
Depending on your needs and different brands recipes, coffee scrubs can come with all sorts of ingredients. Generally speaking you need a lubricant of some sort, we are using coconut oil for our recipe. You will also need a preservative, for ours we will be dissolving some raw sugar and you will also need coffee grounds for our exfoliating component.
How to avoid mould growth
For our at-home coffee scrub we recommend using grounds that aren't spent (moisture will quickly attract mould growth) but if you aren't using spent grounds whats the point? To get around this issue you can still use spent coffee grounds from your brew you will just need to remove the moisture from them. There are a couple of ways to do this but we recommend lining a baking tray with tin foil and baking these until everything has been dried out.
Coffee Scrub recipe:
- First in a large mixing bowl add 200g of coffee grounds, keep in mind that the grind size of this will determin where you can use this on your body.
- Add 100g of raw sugar to your mixture, I recommend mixing your dry ingredients using a whisk or something similar.
- Add 50g of melted coconut oil, mix this in and in increments of 50g at a time until you have reached your desired texture. Some people like to use other natural oils such as avocado oil however I prefer having the balm-like consistency that coconut oil offers once it cools down.
- You are good to go! Everyones skin is different and there is certainly not one recipe that works for everyone but by using varying amounts of oil and different sizes of coffee grinds you can make your own perfect coffee scrub.
