Origami Japan just made a lamp out of their famous Origami Drippers.
What is an Origami Dripper?
Origami are known for their lightweight and beautifully made coffee drippers. These drippers are made from mino-yaki porcelain and have proven to be a fantastic way to make coffee for 2 key reasons, Versatility and Material.
Versatile: The unique design of the 28 folds on the Origami is not just for aesthetic looks, it is cleverly designed to be compatible with the Kalita Wave filters as well as the traditional conical filters.
When brewing with the Kalita wave filters, the folds in the paper fit smoothly against the folds of the Origami dripper and create a seal. This increases the contact time of the coffee and water as well as lowers the amount of bypass (water that escapes into the server and isn't brewed).
The conical filters on the other hand are pushed away from the dripper by the folds, this creates an air pocket for each of the 28 folds and increases bypass for a much quicker draw down.
Material: Ceramics have been used in coffee and tea brewers for many years and while the origami dripper is made from ceramics, it is a very unique ceramics which is actually classified as a 'porcelain' (Mino-Yaki Porcelain) This porcelain retains heat much better than traditional ceramics and best of all is incredibly lightweight. The small Origami Drippers weigh just under 150g
What is the Origami Dripper Lamp?
Recently news broke that Origami have introduced a brand new product, essentially it is a lamp / lightbulb attachment + Origami dripper.
While the Origami dripper is available in a huge array of different colours, as a lamp you are able to choose from 3 modest colours. (Black, White and Matte Grey).
The Origami Dripper portion of the lamp is the exact same as a traditional dripper however the lamp fitting is made from brass.
When lit the White Origami in particular illuminates creating a warm colour and shadow on each of the folds.
This really isn't a surprise:
Origami are known for their Origami dripper, by far the most aesthetic and design orientated coffee dripper available that has appealed to both coffee lovers and aesthetic conscious consumers. So a lamp made from a coffee dripper, truely is no surprise.
True to the inventor of the Origami Dripper's eccentric personality, Mr Yasuo Suzuki does not hold back when it comes to producing whacky and wonderful products.
How much will this set me back:
Currently the Origami Dripper Pendant Lamps are sold for ¥15,400 or $170 AUD.
Can only be used in Japan
Unfortunately here's the catch, the Origami Dripper Pendant Lamp can only be used in Japan as the fittings are specifically designed for Japan's power sockets and voltages.
If you are in Japan you can purchase this from our good friends at Gram Eight.
