The Solright DB-1 Coffee Grinder is a high-precision manual coffee grinder engineered for consistency and repeatability. With 0.022 mm (22 µm) per adjustment click and clearly numbered positions every 10 clicks, it’s easy to keep track of your exact grind setting.
For example:
- #0 = 0 clicks (zero point)
- #1 = 10 clicks (220 µm from zero)
- #2 = 20 clicks (440 µm from zero)
- #2.5 = 25 clicks (550 µm from zero)
This micro stepped adjustment allows you to fine-tune for different brew methods, bean densities, and roast levels and make precision adjustments with enough range to dial in an espresso.
Why Grind Size Matters
Your coffee’s grind size is one of the most important factors in determining flavour and extraction. A slightly finer or coarser grind can completely change the flavour profile highlighting sweetness, balancing acidity, or rounding out bitterness.
There’s no single “correct” grind for a brew method, as coffee origin, roast profile, and personal taste all influence the ideal setting. Instead, think of grind size as a starting point you can tweak for your preferred flavour balance.

Grind Size Recommendations by Brew Method

Espresso
A fine grind is essential for espresso. Start at 2-3 adjustments on the DB-1 and adjust depending on shot time:
- Too slow & bitter? Go slightly coarser.
- Too fast & sour? Go slightly finer.

Hario V60 & Other Pour Over Coffee Methods
The DB-1’s consistency makes it excellent for pour-over brewing. We recommend 6-8 clicks for most recipes. The medium-fine grind allows for balanced extraction and clarity in the cup.

AeroPress
For an espresso-style AeroPress, try 5-8 clicks. For a cleaner, filter-style cup, start at 6-8 clicks.

French Press
Immersion brewing benefits from a coarser grind to avoid over-extraction and sediment. Start at 7-8 clicks.

Cold Brew
Cold brew requires a large particle size for long steeping times. Aim for 8-11 clicks for smooth, low-acid results.
Dialling In Your Grind
Changing grind size is one of the quickest ways to adjust coffee flavour:
- Too bitter, heavy, or harsh? Grind coarser to reduce extraction.
- Too sour, weak, or thin? Grind finer to increase extraction.
Always change grind size in small increments, just a few clicks can make a noticeable difference.
