Understanding Coffee Grind Size
The grind size of your coffee plays a crucial role in determining how your coffee tastes, how your coffee brews and the strength of your brewed coffee, In fact, the grind size is one of the top 3 variables that effect your coffee.
The Etzinger etz-I Regular Grinder provides an outstanding level of control with 88 adjustable steps, each changing the grind size by 20 microns, for reference the Comandante C40 has 30 microns per click. This level of precision ensures that you can fine-tune your grind to match the brewing method of your choice perfectly and has enough range for dialling in espresso coffee.
How many microns is 1 click?
Each click on the Etzinger etz-I Regular Grinder adjusts the grind size by 20µm microns. This offers enough range to allow you to easily dial in your espresso, pour over and most coffee brew methods in between. While the difference between 1 click may not be noticeable when brewing pour over coffee, in some cases it can make a monumental difference for espresso.
Tips for Adjusting Your Grind
When adjusting the grind size on your Etzinger etz-I, it’s essential to first consider the type of coffee and the brewing method you are using but it's unusual for you to get your first coffee tasting perfect, it takes some time to adjust and play around with the grind size and brewing variables before your coffee tastes perfect. Here are a few tips to help you dial in your coffee:
- Start with a Standard Setting: Begin with the settings suggested in our chart above and make small adjustments to find your preferred taste.
- Change one variable at a time: By changing multiple variables you aren't 100% certain that you know which variable had a positive or negative impact on your coffee, always try to change one variable at a time to make dialling in easier.
- Keep a Record: Document the settings and results for each brew. This practice helps in replicating your favourite brews and adjusting more accurately.
- Clean Regularly: Ensure your grinder is clean before making adjustments. Coffee oils and residue can affect the performance and the taste.
- Weigh your ingredients: If you are using a coffee scoop or any other means of measurement that isn't a coffee brewing scale, it will make dialling in coffee impossible. By weighing your coffee beans, water in and yield you can easily remember what worked, what didn't and make changes to improve your coffee.
Etzinger etz-I Grind Size for V60:
The Hario V60 Dripper is one of the most popular ways to brew coffee and because of this has hundreds of different recipes you can choose to brew with all resulting in different expressions of coffee and all requiring different grind sizes.
For the most part I recommend using coffee ground at around 30-45 clicks on the Etzinger Etz-I Regualr Grinder as this is an optimal range for most coffees.
The Hario V60 is a conical dripper that brews using percolation meaning it relies on gravity to pull down the water. I would also define the Hario V60 dripper as a medium speed flowing dripper, so you really don't need to overcompensate too much by grinding too coarse or too fine.
Etzinger etz-I Grind Size for French Press
The French Press method requires a coarser grind to prevent over-extraction and sediment in your cup. Because of this style of brewing we found a grind size of 45-60 clicks on the Etz-I grinder tends to be the optimal range for brewing coffee immersion style on the French press.
Etzinger etz-I Grind Size for Orea V3 Dripper
The Orea V3 range of drippers are known for their fast flow rate, their large hole size located on the base of the brewer paired with the flat bottom design results in a low bypass and very fast brew. We recommend grinding coffee closer to the 20 click mark on the Comandante C40.
Etzinger etz-I Grind Size for Cupping
Cupping coffee can be very technical and even has a whole set of cupping guidelines from the SCA (Specialty coffee Association). We found that grinding coffee at 30-45 Clicks on the Etz-I gives us 900µm and is a great middle ground to asses a range of coffees.
Etzinger etz-I Grind Size for Espresso
Espresso brewing demands a fine grind, by balancing the taste and the speed of coffee extracting you are able to time your espresso shot and dial your coffee to taste. We recommend grinding 5-9 clicks on the Etz-I but this will very much depend on the coffee, roast level and so many other variables.
Because the Etz-I grinder has enough range for espresso you will have very little issues with grinding and dialling in for espresso.
Coffee Grind Size for AeroPress
The AeroPress is a versatile coffee brewer with a range of different styles of coffee it can make, for an espresso-style coffee we found around 15-30 clicks works great but for filter brewing we recommend using 30-45 clicks on the Etzinger Etz-I.
The Etzinger etz-I Regular Grinder is a tool for precision and versatility in coffee grinding. By understanding and utilising the grind settings effectively, you can unlock a world of flavours and textures in your coffee brewing journey.
