Why this is a game-changer?

Aji Filters are our solution to crappy cheap cloth filters that don't hold up to daily use and leave funky cotton tastes in your coffee. Up until now Aji Coffee Tools have made Aji Filters that are suitable for conical and flat bottom coffee drippers, the Aji Trapezoid Filters mark the first of it's kind - a reusable cotton coffee filter, designed for daily use that doesn't fall through on taste.

How Aji Filters effect taste of your coffee:

There's 2 main ways that Aji Filters effect the taste of your coffee. The first is the hole size, the gaps in between the cotton fibres are significantly larger than the holes found in paper coffee filters. This larger hole size allows more coffee oils and some fine particles to pass through, resulting in a creamy taste and a thicker syrupy body / mouth feel.

The second is the fast flow rate, because Aji Filters are significantly faster flowing compared to paper coffee filters we recommend grinding finer than you would for a normal pour over coffee. This finer grind size paired with a faster flowing pour over adds a higher concentration / extraction to your cup of coffee and in turn makes a stronger cup of coffee. With more TDS and a stronger flavour you can extract more from your coffee using Aji Filters.

How long do Aji Filters last?

Aji Filters are built different, literally.
Comprised of two layers of Hand-Loomed Cotton and double stitched on every side, this high quality material paired with a durable design makes Aji Filters long lasting. With daily use you can typically expect your Aji Fitlers to last 2-3 Years (if not longer).

How to use Aji Trapezoid Filters:

  1. Boil your Aji Filter: Before your first brew, please boil your Aji Filter for 10 minutes. This shrinks the cotton into the correct size and removes any naturally occurring starches from the cotton.
  2. Apply the wet Aji Filter into your coffee dripper of choice and add some hot water to pre wet and pre heat your brewing apparatus.
At this stage Aji Filters cotton will transform into a silk-like texture which wraps around the walls of the dripper, the additional water helps to manoeuvre the material into the folds of your coffee dripper.
  3. Brew as usual! As we touched on before, we like to recommend grinding finer to emulate a more traditional tasting pour over coffee however this is completly up to you and your own preferences.
  4. After brewing flip your Aji Filter inside out and discard the coffee grounds, run the filter under a flowing tap to remove any residual coffee grounds / coffee oils.
  5. Store your Aji Filter in water and in the fridge for best results. For other ways to store your cloth coffee filter read this page.

How to clean Aji Filters

  1. First, discard the coffee grounds into a bin/compost and turn the filter inside-out and run it under the tap.
  2. Gently scrub with your hand and then wring out the water a couple of times.

After your filter is clean you are ready for your next brew, or if you wish to store your filter until the next time you brew, keep your filter in a glass of water. Any old glass or Tupperware is fine but we like to store our Aji filters in a Centrifuge Tube as they are water-tight, easy to transport and are perfect to hold your Aji Filter in the fridge.

Using Aji Filters Daily

If you are using your Aji Filter daily, don’t worry about keeping your filter in the fridge, We only recommend storing your filter under water and in the fridge when you plan on not using your Aji filter for longer durations.

How To Store Cloth Coffee Filters

Wet Method - Recommended:

We recommend storing your Aji Filter in water when in-between brews.

Make sure you still clean your filter the exact same, but instead of air drying place your filter under water.

Single Dose Coffee Centrifuge Tubes are commonly sold and passed around in the coffee community for singe dose coffee storage containers.

They also happen to be the perfect size to store your Aji Filter.

  1. Roll up your Aji Filter after cleaning it
  2. Fill your tube with water
  3. Over a sink push your filter in, top up with water if needed.

Air-Dry Method:

If you don’t want to store your filter under water, you can let your filter air dry.

However! Moist cotton is the perfect breeding ground for mildew, so to avoid any bacteria / mold growth wring out as much water as possible after cleaning and store in a warm area to dry as fast as possible.
You wan't to avoid having your filter stay wet for a long period of time.

Air-Dry Hack:

If you have an Origami / Origami Air dripper on hand, you actually have the perfect drying rack for your Cone Aji Filter.

Simply place your Origami Dripper upside down in a warm location (window seals are great!) and after washing your Aji Filter, place your filter on top.

The ridges of the Origami are perfect for allowing airflow and faster drying!
