This stainless steel ball is designed to quickly and evenly cool your espresso, while preserving its flavour and aroma. By cold extract chilling the first 40% of your espresso you are able to capture a huge amount of volatile aromatic compounds resulting in an enhanced tasting espresso.
This isn't just an espresso chilling ball, you can actually use this for pour over coffee too, the large fins can comfortable sit on most espresso cups all the way to larger mugs and servers, accomodating a range of brewing techniques.
How to use:
- First freeze your espresso extract Chilling Ball overnight, any domestic or commercial freezer will be fine.
- Place the frozen ball under your coffee machine portafilter and begin to brew your espresso.
- Push your ball to the side after the first 40% of the espresso has been extracted and allow for the rest of your espresso shot to extract.
- Enjoy your extract chilled coffee!
Does Extract Chilling Actually work?
Extract chilling has made appearances in coffee competitions for many years now, while it was popularised by Hugh Kelly's 2021 WBC routine, the first time the 'technique' was used would've been when Berg Wu from Taiwan competed in the 2016 WBC as they using a frozen portafilters to cool the first part of the espresso.
While there is no doubt behind whether or not extract chilling actually works, the best way to determin if you can taste the difference is to compare two coffees.
Using a portafilter with 2 spouts will allow you to easily extract chill one side of the espresso and leave the other side as your control. Then taste the differences between both espresso shots.
Features:
- Made from high-quality, food-grade stainless steel
- Adjustable Height
- Convenient hook to hang inside your freezer
- Quickly and evenly cools espresso without dilution
- Preserves otherwise lost flavour and aroma of espresso
- Can be used for extract chilling espresso & pour over coffee
Height Adjustable:
We especially love how the Extract chilling balls from Coffee Alive are height adjustable. For those low clearance tight spaces under the portafilter simply flip the ball around and have the ball face downward in the cup. This helps to free up a lot of space and can accomodate a range of different commercial and domestic machines with low clearance.

WASHED PROCESS
TRY A WASHED COFFEEWashed coffees (aka wet process) use water to remove the coffee seed from the cherry. This has the least amount of contact with the fruit and has a clean and often creamy taste. Washed coffees are commonly known to carry more flavours from the origin, terroir and variety rather than the processing flavours.
-
NATURAL PROCESS
TRY A NATURAL COFFEENatural coffees were popularised by producing countries that did not have as much access to water, this processing technique has since been adopted all over the world and tends to carry through a rich fruity flavour from the extended contact with the coffee cherries,
-
FERMENTED
TRY A FERMENTED COFFEEThere are many coffees that fall into this third category of coffee processing, the most popular being Anaerobic fermentation and Carbonic Fermentation (CM).
Expect funky fruity notes and an intense alcohol / boozey taste
