The UFO Type A papers are designed for a medium, balanced flow rate; not too fast, not too restrictive, which makes them perfect for coffees that can easily over-extract or slump into bitterness with the wrong filter.

Think of Type A as your 'coarser-side-of-medium' filter. It allows your brews to open up with clarity while helping you avoid that muddy, over-extracted edge that some highly soluble coffees are prone to.

Why We Like UFO Type A Filters

  • Great for modern processing methods
    Coffees like anaerobic naturals, yeast-inoculated lots, co-ferments and fruitier naturals tend to have extremely high solubility due to cell-wall breakdown during processing.
    Translation?
    They brew quickly and can over-extract fast.
    Type A helps pull back the extraction slightly so you can keep all that juicy flavour without the harshness.
  • Works beautifully with V60 Drip Assist / other water distribution devices.
    Because Melodrip reduces agitation and limits fines migration, these filters promote a surprisingly fast drawdown. Using Type A with a slightly coarser grind keeps the cup sweet, structured and exceptionally clean.
  • Balanced, controlled flow rate
    Not a fast filter but definitely not a slow one. Type A sits in the sweet spot for brewers who want consistent, predictable brews across a wide range of beans.

Grind Recommendation With UFO Filters

For best results, aim for the coarser end of medium.
If you're using a Comandante C40, start around 27-30 clicks.

If you’re brewing heavily processed coffees, err a little coarser, they simply don’t need the extra extraction.

Basic Barista Starting Recipe (Type A)

  • 15g coffee
  • 250g water
  • 92-95°c
  • Aim for a slightly coarser grind than your usual go-to V60 setting

Expect a clean, lifted cup with plenty of clarity and a calmer, more controlled extraction curve.
