This unique type of coffee originated in Gori Gesha forest, in Ethiopia. The Gesha coffee plant is one of the most demanding ones. Plants are low yielding and high maintenance, they take longer to grow before they can be harvested (7-8 years compared to an average of 4 years in other coffees), the cost of production is very high and the quantity of coffee obtained in the end is very low. All of these factors increase the price.

These cherries have been washed and naturally processed for around 22 days until the beans turn into a dark shiny colour.

In 2008, there was a large earthquake in Costa Rica that significantly affected the area where Las Lajas farm is located, there was no electricity or water. That year they decided that it was important to integrate a new coffee process and that was the natural process, because it requires less water.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER:

Oscar and Francisca Chacón are third-generation coffee producers, but coffee is more than just their family heritage: it's in their hearts and souls as well.

The Chacón’s are committed to quality and innovation, and are among the very first farmers in Costa Rica to produce Honey and Natural process speciality coffee.

In 2005, after years of delivering their cherry to a cooperative for the going market price, they decided to join the brand-new "micromill revolution" and buy their own depulper to have more control over the quality and the price they received for their lots. "At first, we didn't know what we were doing," Oscar explains. "We were just experimenting." That experimentation led to some of the most exciting new flavour profiles we have ever tasted.

Francisca Chacon (co-owner) says: “Gesha coffee has a characteristic and complex flavour profile which is caused by the way it is grown and harvested. Our coffee has floral, cherry, raisin and chocolate notes with juicy and sugar mouthfeel.
